Mount Kilimanjaro
Marangu Route (5-6 days)
The Marangu Route is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro, often nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route.” Its steady and gradual climb makes it attractive to many trekkers. However, the shorter duration of this route means there is less time for altitude acclimatization, which can be a challenge for some climbers.
Despite being considered the “easiest” route, Marangu actually has one of the highest non-completion rates because many hikers underestimate the mountain and attempt it without sufficient preparation.
A unique feature of the Marangu Route is its hut accommodation, providing simple dormitory-style shelters that offer more protection from the cold compared to tents. This, along with its proximity to Moshi, makes it one of the most affordable and popular ways to climb Kilimanjaro.
Unlike other trails, Marangu is the only route where both ascent and descent follow the same path.

Machame Route (7 days)
The Machame Route is the second most popular trail to Uhuru Peak after Marangu, and it is highly regarded for its excellent acclimatization profile. Following the principle of “walk high, sleep low,” trekkers have a greater chance of success in adapting to the altitude, which contributes to this route’s impressive summit success rate.
Known for its stunning scenery, the trail passes through dramatically different vegetation zones—from lush rainforest to heath and moorland, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit zone.
Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” because it is considered tougher than the “Coca-Cola Route” (Marangu), Machame is steeper, more demanding, and best suited for adventurous climbers seeking a rewarding challenge.
With its combination of breathtaking landscapes, strong acclimatization opportunities, and higher success rates, the Machame Route has become a favorite among experienced trekkers.

The hike provides a wonderful introduction to Mount Kilimanjaro, allowing you to experience the atmosphere of the legendary mountain, the beauty of its lower slopes, and the thrill of standing on one of the world’s most iconic trekking routes.
